WrestleMania 23 Review

Now, let’s get into the review…

Date – March 30th, 2008

Location – Citrus Bowl, Orlando, Florida

Attendance – 74,635

  • Battle Royal – Kane defeats Mark Henry, Deuce, Domino, Jim Duggan, Stevie Richards, Elijah Burke, The Miz, Shannon Moore, Jimmy Wang Yang, Jesse, Festus, Trevor Murdoch, Lance Cade, Brian Kendrick, Kofi Kingston, Cody Rhodes, Jamie Noble, Chuck Palumbo, The Great Khali, Hardcore Holly, Tommy Dreamer, Snitsky and Val Venis

Headline – The annual WrestleMania pre-show battle royal to give the fans who arrived early some action while everyone else settles into their seats.

Rating – 1 out of 5

  • Belfast Brawl – JBL defeats Finlay (with Hornswoggle)

Headline – This was basically the Irish version of a falls count anywhere match. Hornswoggle would get involed, several weapons were introduced and JBL finally gained the victory after hitting Finlay with his finishing move, the Clothesline From Hell.

Rating – 2 out of 5

  • Money in The Bank Ladder Match – CM Punk defeats Chris Jericho, John Morrison, Mr Kennedy, MVP, Shelton Benjamin and Carlito

Headline – Probably the worst of the Money in The Bank WrestleMania matches, but it was still a very good match and the highlight of the match was Shelton Benjamin hitting a sunset flip power-bomb on Kennedy from the top of one ladder to a ladder that was leaning sideways onto it.

Rating – 3.5 out of 5

  • Singles Match – Batista defeats Umaga

Headline – This was a quick, heavy-hitting match between 2 behemoths and Batista would win after Umaga missed his finishing move, the “Samoan Spike” and Batista hit him with the Batista Bomb for the 3-count.

Rating – 2 out of 5

  • ECW Championship – Kane defeats Chavo Guerrero (C)

Headline – Kane didn’t make an entrance and instead came out from underneath the ring, choke-slammed Chavo and won the title in 11 seconds.

Rating – 0.5 out of 5

  • Career vs Career Match – Shawn Michaels defeats Ric Flair

Headline – This was such a mentally exhausting match to watch (in a good way). Such terrific storytelling was told between these 2 legends and it all culminated with one of the most historic moments in WrestleMania history when a weakened Ric Flair was barely bringing himself to his feet and telling Michaels to hit him and Michaels looked over to him from across the ring and said “I’m sorry, I love you” then absolutely drilled Flair with a Sweet Chin Music and covered him for the 1-2-3, ending Flair’s career. An extremely emotional Flair would leave the ring to a standing ovation from the Orlando, Florida crowd.

Rating – 3.8 out of 5

  • “Lumberjill” Tag-Team Match – Beth Phoenix and Melina (with Santino Marella) defeat Ashley and Maria

Headline – A breather for the fans after the unbelievable emotional roller-caoster that they just endured between Michaels and Flair.

Rating – 1 out of 5

  • Triple Threat Match, WWE Championship – Randy Orton (C) defeats John Cena and Triple H

Headline – In one of the best matches of the night, Randy Orton would retain his title after Triple H hit a Pedigree on Cena and before he could go for the cover, Orton punted him in the head and then pinned Cena for the win.

Rating – 3.3 out of 5

  • No-Disqualification Match – Floyd Mayweather defeats Big Show

Headline – During the match, Mayweather and his entourage tried to walk out but Big Show chased them up the entrance ramp and forced them back into the ring. Mayweather attacked Big Show with a steel chair after one of his entourage members distracted him and then Mayweather grabbed a pair of brass knuckles and lit Show up with a vicious combo of punches for the KO win after Show couldn’t get up after the referee’s 10-count.

Rating – 2.5 out of 5

  • World Heavyweight Championship – The Undertaker defeats Edge (C)

Headline – This was my 2nd favorite Undertaker WrestleMania match. He and Edge put on an absolute classic in the main event of an otherwise, lackluster WrestleMania. The pair traded several finishers and both escaped from near 3-counts and Edge’s backup, Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins both interfered but to no avail. Undertaker would win the World Heavyweight Championship and extend his WrestleMania undefeated streak to 16-0, after getting Edge to tap-out to the “Hell’s Gate” submission hold after Edge nailed him with a spear.

Rating – 4.3 out of 5

WrestleMania 24 Rating – 2.7 out of 5

Summary – This WrestleMania wasn’t one to write home about but with the Undertaker-Edge match and the Shawn Michaels-Ric Flair spectacle, this rating gets beefed up a bit.
