WrestleMania 22 Review

Let’s get into the review…

Date – April 1, 2007

Location – Ford Field, Detroit, Michigan

Attendance – 80,103

  • Tag-Team Lumberjack Match – Carlito and Ric Flair defeat Chavo Guerrero and Gregory Helms

Headline – This was a match to wet the appetite before the main show started as the fans were settling into their seats and had Ric Flair getting one more moment at WrestleMania.

Rating – 2 out of 5

  • Money in The Bank Ladder Match – Mr. Kennedy defeats CM Punk, Edge, Finlay, Jeff Hardy, Booker T, Randy Orton and Matt Hardy

Headline – In my opinion, this was the best match of the PPV. The Money in The Bank matches at WrestleMania would always be show-stealers and this one was no different.

Rating – 4.2 out of 5

  • Singles Match – Great Khali defeats Kane

Headline – This match didn’t offer much. It had a decent little spot whwere Khali would attack Kane after he got the win, with a chain that Kane used in his movie, “See No Evil”.

Rating – 1 out of 5

  • United States Championship – Chris Benoit (C) defeats MVP

Headline – This was a solid match, as you’d expect from Benoit with just about anybody and MVP being a decent in-ring worker in his own right, this didn’t really have a shot at being anything less then good.

Rating – 3 out of 5

  • World Heavyweight Championship – The Undertaker defeats Batista (C)

Headline – This match started off with a bang when Batista drilled Taker with a spear right after the bell rang. The pair exchanged finishing moves and close pin-fall attempts throughout and “The Deadman” would finally put “The Animal” away with his famous Tombstone Pile-driver for the victory. With the win, Taker would win the World Heavyweight Championship and would also improve his WrestleMania undefeated streak to 15-0.

Rating – 3.4 out of 5

  • Eight-Man Tag-Team Match – ECW Originals (RVD, Sabu, Tommy Dreamer and Sandman) defeat The New Breed (Elijah Burke, Marcus Cor Von, Matt Striker and Kevin Thorn)

Headline – The OG’s of ECW brought the youngsters of the new edition of the brand to school on this night. It was great to see the old guys can still go on any given night and even if not at their old level, that they can still hold their own against the new breed. Decent match.

Rating – 2.5 out of 5

  • Hair vs Hair Match (Stone Cold Steve Austin as Special Guest Referee) – Bobby Lashley (with Donald Trump) defeats Umaga (with Vince McMahon)

Headline – Stone Cold would be attacked by Umaga then replaced as Shane McMahon as special guest referee until he would recover and attack Shane and Umaga, causing Lashley to win the match which meant Donald Trump would shave Vince’s head bald. After the shaving, Stone Cold hit a Stunner on Trump.

Rating – 2.8 out of 5

  • “Lumberjill” Match, Women’s Championship – Melina (C) defeats Ashley

Headline – This match didn’t offer much and was yet again, a waste of the women’s division.

Rating – 0.5 out of 5

  • WWE Championship – John Cena (C) defeats Shawn Michaels

Headline – The World Tag-Team Champions would go at it 1-on-1 for Cena’s WWE Championship in a thriller. Mr. WrestleMania, Shawn Michaels would get the absolute best out of the new face of the company and his tag-team partner, John Cena. Cena would put an end to the 30+ minute showcase after making his fellow tag-team champion, submit to his patented STF submission hold.

Rating – 3.9 out of 5

WrestleMania 23 Rating – 3.4 out of 5

Summary – WrestleMania 23 wasd a solid show throughout but had a couple of absolute duds in the form of Khali vs Kane and Melina vs Ashley that brought the rating a decent way down, for me, but was saved by absolute bangers in the Money in The Bank match and Cena vs Michaels.
