Carson Wentz is the latest big-name quarterback to change teams in the offseason following Indianapolis Colts’ trade with the Philadelphia Eagles.
The former number two overall pick really struggled in 2020, eventually losing the starting sport to Jalen Hurts after his side lost their week 13 encounter with the Green Bay Packers 30-16.
Wentz now has the opportunity to start afresh in his career in the NFL. It wasn’t long ago that the former North Dakota State QB was on pace to win the MVP award in the league before a knee injury ended his season.
The former Philadelphia man looked set to be one of the best QBs in the NFL when he shone as a rookie. Although it was Nick Foles who was responsible for the Eagles’ Super Bowl win, without Wentz, the franchise may not have had that opportunity.
There were signs in 2019 that Wentz was returning to his old form again. He threw for over 4,000 passing yards, despite his team struggling with injuries to key receivers on their offense.
Opportunity To Work With Frank Reich Again
The decision to move to Indianapolis was down in no small part to their head coach Frank Reich. He was the offensive coordinator between 2016 and 2017 in Philadelphia, which are Wentz’s best years in the league so far.
Reich has shown a lot of confidence in the 28-year-old by trading for his services. There are set to be a number of veteran QBs on the market this offseason. However, the Colts head coach has decided pretty early that Wentz should be the direction they go with following Philip Rivers’ retirement.
After finishing the 2020 season with an 11-5 record, the Colts were the number seven seeds in the AFC going into playoffs. They were narrowly beaten 27-24 by the Buffalo Bills
Wentz Needs Protection
One of the reasons Wentz has missed so much football over the last few years is because of the number of hits he has received. Expect to see him given a lot more protection in his role in Indianapolis, not just from his offensive line.
Like many of the modern-day quarterbacks, Wentz is very comfortable on his feet. He is able to scramble outside of the pocket and he is not afraid to dive for those extra yards to get a first down. The problem in Philadelphia was that he was asked to do that far too often, which took its toll on his body.Wentz is a very capable quarterback when he is inside the pocket. He has a strong arm, as he proved in 2019 with that excellent year. He is more likely to rely on his arm than his legs in 2021 in his new team. Given his age, there is still more than enough time for Wentz to go on to be a very successful QB in the NFL. This season will be a big year for him in his career as he looks to rebuild his reputation.
