So turns out it wasn’t the cocaine.

All it took was a sugary nostalgia hit for Dave Portnoy to lose his mind on a live broadcast. During Tuesday’s quarantine unboxing saga broadcasted via Instagram and YouTube, the Barstool Sports founder was reunited with something he hadn’t seen in probably 30 years – and he couldn’t have been happier.

“Shut up, shut up,” he shouted to the 60,000 plus fans tuning in as he grabbed the medium-sized yellow poly mailer.

“Alexander The Grape? Are you f***ing kidding me?” he said in awe.

“This is the best candy of all time”

He tore open the bag and was greeted by a white t-shirt with purple lettering that said, “Make America Grape Again.” He quickly threw it on and realized it matches his infamous purple Nike pants that he hasn’t changed since he started the series. He advanced deeper into the package and found himself holding a bag containing decades of sweet memories.

“I love Alexander The Grape, as you can tell by my reaction.”

You could practically see his Swampscott youth flash right before his eyes. Postgame visits to Paul’s Variety brimming from his memory bank.

“I didn’t know they still made these things.”

In an effort to dodge a potential breach in quarantine guidelines by grabbing the sugary purple balls with his hands, Portnoy opted to shovel the candy directly down his throat – a grapey sugar rush of epic proportions.

Since being confined to quarantine due to the current Coronavirus pandemic, Portnoy found a way to remain atop his social media pedestal. Rather than conducting another one of his famous pizza reviews which would require leaving his home, he took to Instagram Live and YouTube to unbox gifts he’s been receiving in the mail. What started out as a spontaneous gimmick, turned into a nightly 3-hour whirlwind swirling with samurai swords, Michael Scott paintings, goldfish and enough swag to clothe a 3rd world country.

About The 1908 Candy Company Following 24 years at Ferrara Pan, Lou Pagano II, 4th generation descendant of the original Ferrara Pan founders, launched The 1908 Candy Company to rebrand their classic candy brands, like Alexander The Grape, Johnny Appletreats, Mr. Melon and Cherry Clan. 1908 refers to the year that Lou’s family founded Ferrara Candy as an Italian bakery in the old Italian neighborhood in Chicago.

In addition to being the year Ferrara was founded, the name is also a homage to the time period when many iconic candy companies were being founded in Chicago, which helped the city gain recognition for decades as the candy capital of the world. About Barstool Sports Barstool Sports is a sports & pop culture blog covering the latest news and viral highlights of each and everyday with blogs, videos and podcasts.
