The Washington Football Team does not exactly have a great past when it comes to drafting long term fits for the organization. In fact, they’ve been great at drafting busts over the past 30 years. Of course there have been some standouts like Chase Young, Ryan Kerrigan, Brandon Scherff and Trent Williams to name a few.

Lately there have been rumblings throughout the district that the WFT may be in fact drafting a quarterback in the first round. WFT just signed Ryan Fitzpatrick to a one year deal and he is the assumed starter for the 2021 season, but he is clearly not the long term solution. They also signed playoff standout Taylor Heinicke who exhibited moments of brilliance in the latter end of the season as well as the playoffs, but he has had limited playing time.

So, will the WFT draft a quarterback in the first round? It depends who slips through the cracks.

Washington has the 19th overall pick and could potentially move up to grab a player or trade back for more picks. Various news sources have said that Washington is open to trading, up or down, but only if the ROI is there.

If Washington stays at No. 19, the top five quarterbacks — Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Mac Jones, Trey Lance and Justin Fields — will all likely be gone. Trading into the top 10 is a possibility, but it probably would cost multiple picks, perhaps including a future first-rounder.

The chances of finding a future starting quarterback late in the first round or even in the second or third rounds are highly unlikely.

My gut instinct tells me that the WFT may draft a quarterback, but it won’t be until the later rounds and someone they just might roll the dice with down the road. Initially I thought they would draft on the offensive line, but with the trade of Ereck Flowers yesterday from Miami, my guess is that the WFT will in fact end up drafting a linebacker. The good thing is that there are plenty of talented individuals at the linebacker position available in this draft, so it would be hard to go wrong there.
