Today is the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C., and in rural Pennsylvania, and one Upper Peninsula high school is setting up approximately 3,000 flags to honor those victims.

Marquette Senior High School students, along with guidance from language arts instructor Eric Hammerstrom are planting to honor the victims.

As first reported by WLUC-TV 6’s Cali Dankovich, the planting of the flags are part of a program called the Young America’s Foundation “Never Forget” Project.

“We talk numbers, but numbers don’t mean much to people,” Hammerstrom said. “You can tell people about 3,000 died, 2,997, and it’s just a number until I bring them out here and put flags in the ground for an hour and find out we’ve only put 400 flags in the ground.”

The flag set up is as part of a section of the book the students are reading called, “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.”

This is the second year of the ‘Never Forget’ Project for the school.
