U.P.’s Jake Witt Waived by Colts: A Hometown Hero Faces a Setback on His NFL Journey
Update:
Jake Witt, the offensive tackle from the Upper Peninsula’s Northern Michigan University, has been waived by the Indianapolis Colts as they prepare to trim their roster ahead of the 2024 NFL season. For Witt, a seventh-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the news marks a challenging chapter in his career.
From the U.P. to the NFL: Witt’s Remarkable Journey
Witt’s journey from the small towns of the U.P. to the professional football field is a story many in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula have followed closely. Known for his time at Ewen-Trout Creek High School, where he excelled as both a basketball and football player, Witt was a local standout who always seemed destined for something special. His transition from a basketball player at Michigan Tech to an offensive tackle at Northern Michigan University showed his incredible versatility, athleticism, and work ethic.
His size—standing 6’7” and weighing around 300 pounds—made him a natural fit for football, even though his experience in the sport was limited compared to many of his NFL peers. Nevertheless, Witt’s sheer physical ability and determination led to his draft selection by the Colts, an achievement celebrated throughout the U.P., where he remains a beloved figure.
As someone who played basketball against Witt in high school, I’ve seen firsthand his athletic prowess and competitive spirit. Even then, it was clear he had the drive to succeed at whatever he put his mind to, and it’s been inspiring to watch his journey from high school courts to NFL fields. Like many from the U.P., I wish him nothing but the best as he continues his journey.
He had a solid preseason but with the Colts having many offensive linemen it became tough for them to keep him.
A Tough Cut, But Not the End
While the news of Witt being waived by the Colts is a setback, it’s far from the end of the road for him. NFL teams are required to reduce their rosters to 53 players before the start of the season, and with Witt’s relative inexperience in football, this move, though difficult, isn’t entirely unexpected. Late-round draft picks often face an uphill battle to secure a spot on the final roster, especially on teams that are looking to build depth in key positions.
However, being waived doesn’t mean Witt is out of the NFL picture. Other teams may claim him off waivers, or he could rejoin the Colts on their practice squad, which would allow him to continue honing his skills. His athleticism, size, and potential are still highly valuable, and with further development, Witt could very well find his way back onto the NFL stage.
Loved and Supported by the U.P. Community
Jake Witt’s story is one that resonates deeply with people from the Upper Peninsula. He represents not just an extraordinary athletic talent but also the values of hard work and perseverance that are at the heart of the U.P. community. From his humble beginnings in Ewen-Trout Creek to his success at Michigan Tech, NMU and beyond, Witt has remained a source of pride for those who watched him grow into a professional athlete.
The U.P. community has rallied around him, following his every step as he chased his NFL dream. Whether it was watching him tear up the basketball court in high school or hearing about his impressive performances on the football field, Jake Witt has always had the backing of his hometown fans.
A Setback for Now, But a Bright Future Ahead
While being waived is undoubtedly a tough moment for Witt, it’s clear that his story is far from over. Many NFL players have been waived early in their careers, only to return stronger and more prepared for the rigors of professional football. For Witt, this might be just another stepping stone in a path that continues to surprise and inspire. He will more than likely end up on a practice squad this year – it’s still onward and upwards for Witt.
As someone who shared the court with him years ago, I, like many in the U.P., have no doubt that Jake Witt has the talent, drive, and perseverance to overcome this setback. Whether he finds himself on another team or returns to the Colts’ practice squad, his story is one that isn’t finished yet.
The Upper Peninsula will continue to root for him, knowing that this is just one chapter in the long, winding journey of a local hero who has already defied the odds time and time again.
Best of luck, Jake—your community is behind you every step of the way.
Before he was drafted last year, I had a quick interview with him:
