After being outrighted to the minor leagues, Red Sox utility man Tzu-Wei Lin had opted into free agency. The 26-year-old has now signed a minor-league contract with the Minnesota Twins.

For the Twins, this is a great depth move as Lin plays primarily shortstop, although he’s played every position on the diamond with the exception of first base. Shortstop Jorge Polanco recently underwent ankle surgery, so should he not be able to make it back they’ll have somebody in his place in house already. They also lost Ehire Adrianza and Marwin Gonzalez in free agency, both of whom play a utility role for the club. Although, with both still unsigned, they could in theory return to the Twin cities.

Lin has spent the better part of a decade in the Red Sox system, as an international free agent in 2012 from Taiwan. 2020 was his fourth big league season. From 2017-2018, he hit .256/.348/.380 in just under 140 PA, winning a championship in 2018. The last two years have been awful, as he now owns a putrid .223/.298/.316 slash with a .614 lifetime OPS over his career.
