The AFC Champ Kansas City Chiefs are slated to face the NFC Champion San Fransisco 49ers in Miami in about a week and a half and the Chiefs are currently favored by a point and a half. This is the classic defense vs. offense matchup, but should KC’s high powered offense be favored over San Fran’s dominant defense?

That’s a great question, so let’s dive into it a little more.

A point and a half obviously isn’t a ton, so this is more or less a pick em situation. So should you really look at the Chiefs to win this game?

The Chiefs have been able to score seemingly at will so far this post-season while the ‘9ers have more or less shut down two very good offenses, while running all over two very good defenses. If Kansas City wins it is because of #15. Patrick Mahomes is playing out of this world and has the athleticism, I think, to neutralize the dominant San Fransisco defensive front which they have invested four first round picks in the past five years.

My concern for KC is the 49ers ability to be multiple on offense. San Fransisco has been able to beat teams a number of different ways on offense but it is all based on the dominant three-headed running game, that was led last week by Raheem Mostert and his 4 rushing touchdowns. Over the course of the regular season, the Chiefs allowed 128 rushing yards per game, which was seventh worst in the league.

There is some hope for the Chiefs defense, however, as they held the league’s leading rusher (Derrick Henry) to less than 70 yards and only 3.6 yards per carry.

The 49ers are much more diverse than the Tennessee Titans, as they can attack you through the air with dominant two way threats such as Greg George Kittle leading the way. They scored 37 points against the Packers while only throwing eight passes.

Mahomes isn’t the first elite quarterback that the 49ers have faced either, they have beaten the likes of Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers (twice), and Russell Wilson. If anyone can shut down Mahomes, it would be the 49ers and their #1 rated pass defense.

So back to my original question, should the Chiefs be favored over the 49ers?

My answer: Probably.

Is that a cop out answer? Yeah it kind of is. We are still a week and a half away from the game, so I’m sure I will change my mind 38 times until then. I think if anyone is going to scheme guys open it is Andy Reid. If anyone is going to roll out to the left and throw to his right while evading a deadly Nick Bosa rush, it would be Mahomes. If anyone is going to shake loose of the 49ers secondary it is top playmakers Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce.

I won’t be betting on this game, because I truly feel it can go either way. Mahomes can score whenever he wants but the 49ers can dominate time of possession with that multiple offense and running game.

I will just be rooting for a good game, which I fully expect it to be.

Pro Sports Extra will have much more coverage of Super Bowl LIV leading up to the game.
