David Backes was placed on waivers today by the Boston Bruins, possibly ending the former All Star’s NHL career. Backes signed a 5 year, $30 million deal with the Bruins in 2016. In 16 games this season, Backes has a goal and 2 assists.

Backes has had a great NHL career as a heavy center that could score goals and kick your ass all in the same shift. Unfortunately, we didn’t see much of that in Boston. His first year in Boston was pretty good, with 17-21-38 in 74 games, but since then he’s been inconsistent both in terms of production and his ability to just get in the lineup.

I remember the initial report of the Backes signing in Boston being for 1 year and $5 million and I jumped so high I nearly hit the ceiling. Then, it quickly was corrected to 5 years at $30 million for a 31 year old. Suddenly I wished I had hit my head on the ceiling fan. That’s probably a contract Don Sweeney wants back.

if this is it for Backes in the NHL, well, he’s had a hell of a career.
