New York Giants team president John Mara said there is no rush right now to have talks with running back Saquon Barkley about a possible new contract. Barkley, who is in his six month of recovery from a torn ACL that occurred during the 2020 season is in the final year of his rookie contract. Coming out a college, Barkley was recognized as one of the best running backs we’ve ever seen and it’s been hard for him to stay healthy on the field. In his rookie year, Barkley rushed for 1300 yards and 11 touchdowns then followed that up with 1000 yards and 6 touchdowns in only 13 games his second year before injuring his ankle. This past season he only played two games before suffering an ACL injury. Although I believe he is going to be able to bounce back from this, the question is what is his value on the market? Especially with the cap space going up because if the Giants don’t pay him, somebody will.

“I said it at the end of the season and I’ll say it again: We hope he’s going to be a Giant for life and at the appropriate time we’ll start those discussions,” Mara said during a video conference call with reporters Wednesday.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget what Barkley’s been able to do on the field, last season the Giants finished 6-10 without their superstar running back. If Barkley and the Giants can get back to old form, they’re going to be a problem, and Barkley will be taken care of financially. There’s no doubt Daniel Jones misses him dearly, because with Barkley it opens up so much for the passing game to attack down field, which is something we weren’t able to see this past season without him.
