In the upset of the century the US Patent and Trademark Office has denied
The Ohio State University the trademark for the word “the”. First reported by the world’s foremost source for useless info, Darren Rovell:
JUST IN: The US Patent & Trademark Office has issued an initial decision on Ohio State's attempt to trademark the word "THE." They have refused the application.— Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) September 11, 2019
This comes as no surprise, as how is one entity supposed to own the most common word in the English language (Actual fact!)?
This means that every former Buckeye can no longer say “THE” Ohio State University when they announce the college they attended on Sunday Night Football1. They also must remove the word “the” from ever existing on their campus2.
Chalk this one up as a win for the people.
Of course people were also having a little fun with this news at the expense of Jim Harbaugh and Michigan:
The Patent & Trademark Office has more wins against Ohio State than Jim Harbaugh https://t.co/XgF3ZneT0P— UConn is home (@NoEscalators) September 11, 2019
We will see if they make a similar decision for LeBron and his Taco Tuesday addiction.
