On second thought, Doug Pederson would not have played for a tie.

The Philadelphia Eagles (0-2-1) lined up for a 59-yard field goal on fourth-and-7 with 19 seconds left in overtime against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. After a false start penalty on Matt Pryor, Pederson elected to punt instead of going for it on fourth-and-12 from the Bengals 46 or letting Jake Elliott attempt a 64-yarder.

After thinking about it overnight, Pederson changed his mind.

“Looking back, I probably would have elected to go for it in that situation and maybe try a ball down the field,” Pederson said Monday. “There were 19 seconds left on the clock. It’s a situation where you take the shot. And I learned from it, and I’ll move on.”

The Bengals ran the ball on one play from their 11 after the punt and the teams settled for a 23-23 tie.

There are plenty of reasons why the Eagles were even in that situation against winless Cincinnati (0-2-1). The offense is out of sync and the defense can’t make any big plays.

“Right now we’re not a very good football team,” Pederson said. “We’re not very smart. We’re shooting ourselves in the foot. We’re leaving touchdowns on the field offensively, and we’re just not executing.”

Still, the Eagles are only a half-game behind Dallas (1-2) and Washington (1-2) in a weak NFC East.

As the 49ers emerge from their first victory in week 3, they’ll look to capitalize on that momentum in keeping the Eagles from gaining a first win of their own. Despite the 49ers’ quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo being sidelined by injury, Nick Mullens stepped in with 343 passing yards, including a touchdown. Along with Garoppolo’s injury, tight end Jordan Reed was hurt last week and won’t be back for at least six weeks, if not longer.

Philadelphia has its own set QB problems with Carson Wentz and his lack of production. Wentz is at the bottom of the NFL stack when it comes to passer rating. Last Sunday he went 29 for 47 which also included two interceptions. If the Eagles have any hope of notching their first win of the 2020 season, they’ll need Wentz, with his newly signed contract, to step up and contribute significant yardage. For now, head coach Doug Pederson is committed to keeping Wentz starting at quarterback.

Both teams have had a rough start, but, especially for the Eagles, a win on Sunday would keep them firmly in the hunt with a division that’s started slowly. The 49ers, on the other hand, will need a win here if they have any chance of regaining footing in a fierce division.
