The San Francisco created bit of quarterback controversy to their team in late April when the team decided to make Trey Lance their first round draft pick. It is has been no secret for quite some time now that the 49ers will not sold on Jimmy Garoppolo as the long term answer to the quarterback position, and it seems like at this point they are “all in” on Trey Lance.
When the 49ers decided to add Lance to the rosters, he became the 5th quarterback on the roster. Clearly, there is not room for five quarterbacks on any team, so the 49ers had to make a cut and they did so earlier today.
Johnson started in the NFL as a fifth-round choice of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008. He also previously played for teams such as the Washington Football Team, Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, New York Giants, Houston Texans, New York Jets and the Cincinnati Bengals.
In other 49ers news, there has been discussion about what is next for Jimmy Garoppolo after San Francisco has now signed Trey Lance. Will Lance be the presumed starter, or will Garoppolo be the lead man? Or, will the 49ers get rid of him sooner than later?
For now, it sounds like Garoppolo has a spot on the 49ers roster. Whether that is in the starting position or second string is to still be determined. With that said, don’t be surprised if a starting quarterback goes down during preseason if Garoppolo is not eventually traded.
