Royals Sign Michael Taylor

Michael A. Taylor, who won the World Series with the Nationals in 2019, has signed a one-year commitment with the Kansas City Royals. It’s the Royals second major league signing in the last 24 hours.

Taylor, like Minor, is a buy-low and flip veteran option for the Royals. At 29, he had a down 2020 hitting to a putrid .196/.253/.424 slash with a negative BRef WAR. Over his career, however, he has posted a 3.6 WAR despite a lifetime .237 average and minimal pop. His speed and defense make him a player that makes sense for the Royals to target. The Royals obviously hope he can return to 2017 form so they can warrant a major haul at the deadline, but this seems as if the season was an anomaly. Taylor’s lifetime OPS is .686, but his 2017 saw him posting an .806 OPS. That season he hit 19 homeruns and .271. His other career highs were .250 in 2019 and 14 HR in 2015, respectively.
