Romeo Okwara Is Quietly Having A Pro Bowl Caliber Season

There’s no doubt the Lions defense has struggled this year. Well saying the defense has struggled is putting it nicely, the defense has been abysmal all year. The defense is 27th overall in yards allowed and 29th in points allowed. Yikes, but one bright spot for this defense has been the play of Romeo Okwara.

He ranks 4th overall in highest pressure rates, 24 tackles, and a team-leading six sacks in nine games. The next closest Lion is Everson Griffen with 3.5 sacks but 2.5 of those came before he was even on the Lions. In the last four games, Okwara has four sacks and is tied for 12th in the NFL for sacks.

Okwara is having a pro bowl type season but most likely won’t get recognized for his great play. Mainly, because the plays for the Lions and is on a trash defense. It’s not his fault this defense is awful, he’s playing lights out and doing everything he can. His contract is up at the end of the season, plus he’s only 25. Okwara hasn’t even reached his physical prime and could be due for a big-time pay upgrade.
