WWE has recently seen the women’s evolution lead to the women becoming the focal point of WWE. At the helm is talents such as Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, Asuka and Alexa Bliss. However, for years there were many really strong and popular acts that were held back and not allowed to reach their full potential. This is true for former WWE Women’s Champion and Divas Champion, Melina Perez, who is one of the greatest athletes the ring has ever seen.

Armed with her signature split entrance, Melina was the poster for what a “diva” was supposed to be when she came in as the paparazzi crazed valet of MNM, who became one of the most dominant tag teams the WWE has ever seen. Following ex boyfriend Johnny Nitro’s (currently SmackDown’s John Morrison) Intercontinental Championship reigns, she became paired with Mick Foley. In February of 2007, she defeated Mickie James for her first of three women’s championships. During their feud, they contested in the first ever women’s falls count anywhere match.

One of the most improved female workers of all-time, Melina left WWE in 2011. She has been working on the Independent circuit and even worked closely with current NXT talents such as Piper Niven, Tegan Nox and NXT UK Women’s Champion Kay Lee Ray. Melina most recently worked for Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, in his NWA promotion.

Some of the strongest matches from the “divas” era was her work with Mickie James, Beth Phoenix and Michelle McCool. She also worked hands on with talents such as Batista, Mark Henry, Road Warrior Animal, Ric Flair and others during her initial run with the company.

It’s being reported by Mike Johnson of PWInsider that she has signed a deal to return to the company after a nine year absence. She’ll reportedly return this week, however the capacity is unknown. Melina is currently 41 years old.
