As I’ve recently reported on Twitter, the Detroit Lions are closer to keeping Darrell Bevell as head coach than people think. Current players have even voiced their opinion to higher-ups about keeping Bevell.

Bevell was given an opportunity as interim head coach after Detroit fired Matt Patricia. The week after? Bevell helped the Lions to their first win against the Chicago Bears – something that Patricia didn’t do in three years.

Although Bevell wasn’t able to fix Detroit’s defense in five weeks – some people are using it against Bevell. If you’re to ask me, that defense was already too far gone from Matt Patricia. And during those few games under Bevell the defense never stopped fighting.

On the other side, the offense looked the best that it has in Matthew Stafford‘s entire career. Stafford was playing loose and comfortable.

Matthew Stafford has also spoken very highly of Bevell. And Bevell also made it clear that if he is given a long term contract at head coach that he’d want to keep Stafford.

If Bevell is kept in the head coaching position in Detroit, expect Detroit to hire Minnesota Vikings assistant GM, George Paton. Bevell spent time with Paton in Minnesota.
