Remembering Coach Jerry Bugni: A Legacy of Dedication to L’Anse Hornets and the Community
The L’Anse community is mourning the loss of legendary football coach and educator Jerry Bugni, who passed away at the age of 83. Known for his unwavering commitment to local athletics and education, Bugni dedicated over five decades to coaching and mentoring students at L’Anse High School, where he also spent 37 years as a respected math teacher.
A Lifetime of Service and Achievements
Bugni’s remarkable career spanned 55 years, with 33 of those years as the head football coach for the L’Anse Hornets. His tenure as coach began a legacy that would see him recognized as one of the most influential figures in U.P. high school sports. Bugni’s coaching prowess earned him multiple accolades, including being named Copper Country Conference Coach of the Year and Class C State Coach of the Year in both 1968 and 1988. His impact on high school football led to his induction into the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1995, as well as the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame.
In addition to his achievements in football, Bugni’s influence extended to other sports, including basketball and track and field. Over a 46-year coaching career, he inspired countless athletes, always emphasizing the importance of hard work, integrity, and sportsmanship. As a former Athletic Director, Bugni was instrumental in developing the school’s athletic programs and was a key figure in the construction of a new football field and athletic complex, a project that continues to benefit the L’Anse community.

I actually was coached by Bugni. Once in football for a season and another in junior high basketball. He cared a ton about the kids. That’s for sure!

He retired from teaching in 2004, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to both education and athletics.
Born and raised in Wakefield, Michigan, Bugni was a standout multi-sport athlete himself, an experience that would shape his approach as a coach and mentor. His achievements as an athlete and coach have left an indelible mark on the L’Anse community, where he is remembered not only for his accomplishments but for his character, kindness, and unwavering support for his students and players.
