What can I say? Michigan High School Athletic Association should be ashamed after watching this game. It doesn’t matter if it’s high school, college, or the pro’s. Iron Mountain Mountaineers just got screwed out of a State Title. On top of that they drove roughly 500 miles there to get screwed out of a title. Imagine that ride back? Knowing you got robbed out of changing your schools history? I’m not going to recap this game, let’s just jump into two plays that decided the game.
Aw man, these @MHSAA hoops title games are wild. Iron Mountain might get robbed: bad travel call, and then a bad intentional foul call w/ less than a second left.— David Betts (@dbetts10) March 16, 2019
I feel your pain Iron Mountain! Awful call— Anthony Ianni (@AI44LYD) March 16, 2019
Final: Pewamo-Westphalia defeats Iron Mountain 53-52 in the Division 3 state final in one of the most controversial endings I’ve seen. pic.twitter.com/fRbDnWOsT6— Bryce Derouin (@B_DEROUIN) March 16, 2019
“I”d be in handcuffs if I were that IM coach” — text from rather recent state finals coach.— Steve Bell (@BankHoops) March 16, 2019
Iron Mountain got screwed. That’s just awful. @MHSAA— upfootball (@upfootball) March 16, 2019
So first off as Iron Mountain has a one point lead… They’re about to score… And… they called this travel call. How is this a travel? This is the most proper way to do a layup. (Iron Mountain would be up by 3)
There was also this travel called on Tony Feira that set up Pewamo’s possession. pic.twitter.com/almA3PELrH— Bryce Derouin (@B_DEROUIN) March 16, 2019
So now… Instead of being up 3, Iron Mountain was up by 1 and Pewamo would get the ball underneath. Iron Mountain had a foul to give…. So they foul and instead of calling a common foul, they called an intentional foul so Pewamo-Westphalia got to shoot two free throws… For the win.. These two calls both happened with under 5 seconds left. Two calls in a row.
This was the intentional foul they called on Iron Mountain’s Marcus Johnson. Pewamo-Westphalia gets two FTs, 0.7 seconds left in game. pic.twitter.com/9IhOCLZB7C— Bryce Derouin (@B_DEROUIN) March 16, 2019
The game-winning FT from Pewamo-Westphalia’s Collin Trierweiler. The senior sank 2 FTs with 0.07 seconds left to defeat Iron Mountain 53-52 in the @MHSAA D3 boys basketball state finals. pic.twitter.com/bpphKJXrA4— Patrick Nothaft (@Patrick_Nothaft) March 16, 2019
Let’s not take away from the great game or anything referee(s) – Way to make it the game about you, and not about the game. Iron Mountain should have let them shoot the half court shot in my opinion. But a common foul, would be foul to give. And Iron Mountain would have been State Champions.
Iron Mountain should be State Champions. On the other side, Iron Mountain is a young team, but for those seniors, they’ll more than likely never have a shot at another opportunity to win a championship.
And for the people that are saying “Oh, they should have played better in the fourth” and “scored more points” come on… You’re joking.. You can’t be serious… No matter what team it is, they got robbed from a State Title..
Here is coach Bucky Johnson after the game…. If I was him, that table might have been flipped.
Some Iron Mountain players take off their runner-up medals immediately after receiving them. Head coach Bucky Johnson accepts the trophy and leaves it by an MHSAA championships sign.— Adam Niemi (@AdamNiemi) March 16, 2019
Iron Mountain up 1 – could go up 3 after breaking the press. You make the call. Official called a travel. Travel or no? pic.twitter.com/Et0qvYaQWg— Steve Finamore (@CoachFinamore) March 16, 2019
LEAVE YOUR THOUGHTS IN THE COMMENTS BELOW…
This can never be given back to those seniors on Iron Mountain….
So…. I figured it was time to giveback somehow anyway.
I went ahead and designed a couple of t-shirts to help offset some of the costs the team had traveling. Feel free to buy one or ten of them. They’ll be shipped out within seven days of ordering. We are donating $8 per t-shirt sold. And if you’re complaining that we aren’t donating 100% of the proceeds. I realized after last time I did that, that it’s better to just pick an exact number per shirt. So $8. Buy it or don’t. The orders (name) will be shown below and updated with the amount we will be donating back. You you can go buy t-shirts off of other websites, who aren’t donating anything back, or go donate $25 to the Iron Mountain Athletic program there address can be found by clicking here. Either way, this is for Iron Mountain Athletic program for being robbed of a Championship.
