The baseball world was shook to the very core a year ago around this time when the Astros cheating saga was released. It was noted that the 2017 Astros sign-stealing scheme was player driven with help from the bench coach. The bench coach of the 2017 Astros? Red Sox manager Alex Cora. The Sox were also indicted, albeit not nearly as harsh, for the season they won the World Series in 2018, the first under the Cora regime.

Cora was suspended for a year without pay by MLB and fired by the Red Sox as former Brewer manager Ron Roenicke stepped in. He has now been brought back.

Cora, who also won a championship as a player with Boston in 2007, went 192-132 in his first stint as manager of the Red Sox, but the team landscape has changed entirely. The team has fallen apart and the front office traded former AL MVP Mookie Betts.

But, Cora’s lost the clubhouse. The Red Sox have lost key players. Is this the recipe for success? He isn’t the only head coach in major sports currently that took a year off for a suspension after a championship and was rehired, considering Sean Payton’s tenure with the New Orleans Saints in the NFL. PSE will have analysis on the hire later.
