If there was anything that I remember back from college – there was a drinking game that was popular among my buddies back in the day. Caps. For those of you who don’t know what Caps is, please see this video here:

If you didn’t watch the video, let me explain it the best way I can. Usually, we play caps with a partner. There are four players total in the game. It’s helpful to have two pint glasses, a bunch of beer caps from bottled beer, and a few towels just so you don’t leave a mess. Luckily for me, I drank nothing but Leinenkugel’s Seasonal Beers all through college, so I have about a coffee can full of caps where I can play a game just about anywhere. A normal track? It depends, the track in my living room was about 8 feet, which is adequate in my opinion. A game of Caps is 7 made caps, and you must win by 2 caps. If you get to 6s, you all must announce “SIXES!” as loud as you can, because hell, it’s fun that way. When a team makes a cap, and the rebuttal is missed, you are supposed to share a pint glass of beer with your partner.

The WHO (World Health Organization) urges people to not gather in groups more than 10 in a single setting and to distance at the minimum of 6 feet due to COVID-19 spreading at an alarming rate. We threw a little spin on things. Because Zoom is popular at the moment with college classes, my buddy called me on the phone on Tuesday night stating that we should try the idea. So, I called my best friend and Travis called his buddy, and the game was on. I cast my laptop to my TV (helps to have a Chromecast) and used Google Hangouts instead to cast directly to the TV. Make sure you have a good internet connection and can visually see the glass – that’s what we had a tough time with doing – but we announced whether or not after a shot if it was a miss or a make.

All in all, the night was a success – I ended up playing three games – and was able to catch up on gossip with all of my buddies. We advertised the idea over Snapchat and by the middle of our game, we had other people calling in to watch and even start games of their own. I hope more games of this start in the future – we created a Facebook Group for anyone to join and get their games going. I’ll leave some recommendations down below to help you get started should you be interested in a game of Caps for yourself to survive COVID-19. Or play Boom Cup, I don’t care.

My recommendations:

  • Streaming: You can use Zoom – but keep in mind that with the free version of Zoom, you’re only allowed 40 minutes of a meeting and recording. Highly suggest if you use Zoom to play with people who may be living with you – if you just call directly to one person in Zoom, you can call and record as long as you wish. Other streaming methods: Google Hangouts, Microsoft Teams, Facebook Live, FaceTime. We also used a TV just so the players could see the glasses a little bit more clear; there was a little bit of lag, but it worked for us.
  • Use light beers – Busch Light, Bud Light, Coors Light, Michelob Golden Light. If you use bitch drinks like Naturdays, expect a ton of gut rot.
  • We go by seniority with the group of friends I play with. You could do rock, paper, scissors, but to be honest, that’s stupid.
  • Announce makes or misses. That helped out the guys who may of not had the best connection at home.
  • Drink halfsies (half a pint glass of beer) on your own if you’re playing with a partner. You tend to not get so full when you do so, and chugging a full pint of beer gets challenging the more times during a game you do it. Plus you don’t go through that much beer and you don’t have to go to the liquor store quite as much. If you are not in drinking shape, you will puke.
  • Play responsibly and everyone is a winner.
