The Philadelphia Phillies have released struggling utility player Whit Merrifield. He was signed this past offseason to add versatility and depth to the Phillies roster.
Merrifield has a .199 batting average with three homers, 11 RBI and only eight extra-base hits in 53 games this season.
The 35 year-old former three-time All-Star has struggled mightily at the plate all year. Merrifield was a .284 career hitter as he entered this season.
You have to wonder, if Merrifield has the wall as a player or will a change of scenery turn things around for him.
The Phillies have called up Weston Wilson to take Merrifield’s spot on the roster, as per Matt Gelb.
