Last week Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson announced that he would forgo the 2019 NFL Draft to return for his final season of eligibility. On December 26, Oregon’s Justin Herbert made the same decision. As a freshman for the Ducks in 2016, Herbert tossed 19 touchdowns with 1,866 yards in just seven starts, making him the first true freshman quarterback to start for the University of Oregon since 1983.
After missing five games in 2017 with a broken collarbone, Herbert completed 59.6 percent of his passes for a career-high 28 touchdowns and 2,985 passing yards in 12 games as a junior in 2018. The 6’6″233-pound gunslinger led the Ducks to an 8-4 record in 2018. Oregon will finish the 2018 season in the Redbox Bowl against the Michigan State Spartans (7-5) on December 31.
