Denver Broncos GM John Elway has been under heavy scrutiny after the team failed to achieve a postseason appearance in back to back seasons AND suffered their 1st losing campaign in 7 years, plummeting to a 5-11 finish and last place in the ever-competitive AFC West.
After going 12-4 and hoisting the Lombardi during the 2015-2016 NFL season, they’ve won just 14 games since. They have an elite defense.
They have decided to stick with Vance Joseph at the helm (for the time being) with Elway openly admitting to failing the coaching staff and that failure most notably rests with their offensive unit.
They compiled a -17 turnover differential, 2nd worst in the NFL to the lowly Browns. The QB situation has been a nightmare, which is where most of the scrutiny and blame has been placed.
Trevor Siemian has regressed horribly, Paxton Lynch looked like a deer in headlights most of the time along with battling some injuries, and Brock Osweiler is NOT a starting quarterback in the NFL. Their playmakers on offense are limited and WILDLY inconsistent. The offensive line still needs work. Garrett Boles, their 1st round pick last season, struggled with holding penalties for a bulk of the season.
Watch while Elway shoots for the stars and tries to acquire a big-time free agent quarterback before adding one in the draft. Kirk Cousins appears to be the big fish they hope to reel in, Drew Brees will become a free agent in March as well, and while they may not have the notoriety of the other two aforementioned stars, ALL 3 of the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterbacks (Sam Bradford, Teddy Bridgewater, & Case Keenum) will help spice up free agency as well.
The Broncos currently have the No. 5 pick in the 2018 NFL draft and enter it with endless possibilities. However, Elway may want to right his wrongs and acquire as much top-flight offensive talent as possible. In his 7th season as the head honcho in the Mile High city, this may be his most important offseason yet..
