It is always unfortunate to learn of the passing of anybody, let alone a professional athlete you grew up watching. It was reported earlier this week that former New York Yankees and New York Mets catcher Phil Lombardi passed away due to complications with brain cancer surgery.

Lombardi was a third round draft pick of the Yankees in 1981. He played mostly as a September call-up during the 1986 and 1987 seasons with the Yankees. He was traded with Steve Frey and Darren Reed for Rafael Santana and Victor Garcia following the 1987 season.

He spent two seasons with their Triple A affiliate, the Tidewater Tides, making only eighteen appearances with the big league squad in 1988. He was claimed on waivers by the Atlanta Braves on April 4, 1990. Five days after being traded to Atlanta, Lombardi retired from baseball.

In other MLB news, speculation has been running amuck about Kris Bryant getting traded. Is it possible we can see Bryant get traded to New York? While I believe that Bryant will likely stay with the Cubs long term, it’s very possibly that another franchise will make a serious push to acquire him. The Yankees could definitely use someone like Bryant on their roster. Check the video out above and see for yourself.
