Tragedy has struck the NFL on multiple occasions in 2021. Just last week, former New York Giants head coach Jim Fassel passed away. Now unfortunately, the New Orleans Saints are the one who have received some very bad news.

It was announced last last month that the second ever head coach of the New Orleans Saints, J.D. Robert’s passed away at the age of 88.

Robert’s was responsible for bringing Archie Manning, the father of Peyton and Eli Manning to the Saints organization. Robert’s first started working for New Orleans in 1967 and was named as the interim head coach in 1970.

Archie Manning had the following to say about Robert’s:

“He put me in right away whether I was ready or not, and he could have easily pulled me out sometimes, because there were a lot of struggles,” Manning said of Roberts in a statement on the team’s website. “But he always had my back and supported me. He put me in right away whether I was ready or not, and he could have easily pulled me out sometimes, because there were a lot of struggles,” Manning said of Roberts in a statement on the team’s website. “But he always had my back and supported me.”

In other NFL news, current Saints head coach Sean Payton reflected on former Giants head coach Jim Fassel. Payton worked for four years under Fassel as the quarterbacks coach and later the offensive coordinator the Giants. See what he had to say below.

“He gave me a great opportunity back in 1999 to not only be the quarterback coach, but then a year later to be the play caller and offensive coordinator for the first time in this league,” Payton said. “That’s something that you never forget. He and I had a real good relationship. His son (Dallas Cowboys special teams coordinator John Fassel) and his other family members will carry on his legacy,” Payton said. “But he made a big impact on a lot of people.”
