Drummer and member of Canadian rock band ‘Rush,’ Neil Peart, died Tuesday in Santa Monica, Calif., after a lengthy battle with brain cancer, as confirmed by a family spokesperson. He was only 67 years old.

Nicknamed as ‘the Professor,’ Peart was famous for eccentric and unique drumming style, and also as a lyricist for most of Rush’s songs. He was the band’s drummer for 45+ years, all the way up to his retirement in 2015.

Along with contributions from bandmates bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson, a few of Peart’s famous songs he had written include ‘Tom Sawyer,’ ‘Spirit of Radio,’ and ‘Limelight.’

The band’s Twitter account posted this message after learning about Peart’s passing.

In addition to Lee and Lifeson, Peart is survived by his wife, Carrie Nuttall, and daughter Olivia.
