This morning NASCAR released a statement along with an official photo of the garage pull down rope that many are saying was fashioned in the design of a noose, that was founded in the garage assigned to Bubba Wallace and the 43 Team Petty car at the Talladega superspeedway. Wallace is the only African American driver on the circuit.

An FBI investigation concluded that no hate crime occurred, and the makeshift noose was not placed into Wallace’s garage intentionally but served as a pull-down rope and was in place since the fall of 2019. The attached photo was given as evidence.

Since releasing this photo, many have taken to social media to question as to if the FBI report is correct. Several people have commented that the rope appears to be fashioned to looks like a noose. As an exercise I turned to Google and compared the Talladega garage to other garages of famous tracks on the NASCAR circuit to see if other garages have similar door pull down ropes that were fashioned similar. I was unable to locate any. Here are a few examples.

Daytona International Speedway

New Hampshire

Charlotte Motor Speedway.

These are just three examples. I viewed pages of photos of garages at multiple tracks that hold NASCAR events both for the CUP series as well as lower level events. I was unable to find a single photo of any garage door pull down rope that was similar in design to the one found in Talladega.

When questioned about the FBI findings, Wallace made the following statement. “”It was a noose,” Wallace said. “Whether tied in 2019 or whatever, it was a noose. So, it wasn’t directed at me but somebody tied a noose. That’s what I’m saying.”
