We are days from Thanksgiving. By far, my most favorite holiday of the year, simply because it’s a day where you’re constantly surrounded by food that you can eat and reheat and eat later on, while watching some great football games. Have a few beers here and there, and you’re passed out for the second half of your football game.

Once the football game wraps up, it’s time to dig into some pie. That being said, I decided to put together my own personal Top Ten Rankings of Thanksgiving Pies to devour or explore during the holiday. My family repeats certain pies each and every year, with reason, but wanted to give the world a second opinion of a different palette.

Everyday is a great day for pie. I grew up near Osseo, Wisconsin, which is home to Norske Nook – it has a never ending list of different pies you can try. If you’re ever in Western Wisconsin, traveling along Interstate 94 on your way towards the Twin Cities or Madison, stop on in.

10. Cherry Pie

Yes, it’s a classic. But the one problem that I have with Cherry Pie is the filling. Get me a cherry pie with real cherries, and I’ll reconsider. Still a favorite of mine.

By the way, speaking of cherry pie filling, if you wanted to look really impressive to your significant other or family members, take some cherry pie filling (you can buy it anytime, anywhere) and spread that atop some pork chops or any kind of pork cut you have. Bake until done, which it’ll be done once you temp the meat at 145ºF, and then serve. You’re welcome. $20 Chef, you can give me the credit. Thanks.

9. Peach Pie

Another pie I don’t hear about too much around Thanksgiving, especially living in the Upper Midwest. It’s a pie I wish I could have more often. Best served warm out of the oven with vanilla ice cream.

8. Raspberry Sour Cream Pie

I love the uniqueness that comes with Raspberry Sour Cream Pie. Sour cream in a pie? That’s weird…

Absolutely not. Check out the texture of this pie. Has me salivating as I type this. Not too popular during this holiday, but if there was a pie I wanted to have, this one would rank up there. Try a slice sometime.

7. Sweet Potato Pie

Song, Song of the South. Sweet Potato Pie and I shut my mouth.

This was a pie that my family decided to experiment with one Thanksgiving and it’s stayed on our kitchen table each and every year during Thanksgiving. It’s not that bad of a pie. Grab some whip cream and it’s a super sweet dessert.

6. French Silk Pie

The fancier desserts you’ll see, I think the best slice of French Silk I had was at a Perkins in Black River Falls, WI while with Tanner Johnson (@VuhnillaGorilla), while we prepared for our State FFA Office Candidacy. Aside from the point, it’s the bits and pieces of chocolate that sit on top of the whipped cream that gets me all excited

5. Lemon Meringue Pie

Picture a lemon bar. Popular dessert, even a more popular pie. It’s tough to make this pie to perfection – it’s definitely not a pie that we’ve tried at home. I’ve made meringue in food science class, all it is, is egg whites whipped with a little sugar. I’m sure it’s not too difficult to make. Maybe a pie to try in the near future.

4. Blueberry Pie

If you can make a blueberry pie with real blueberries, consider it a winner. Throw some ice cream on there and you’ve got it. Pre-made blueberry pies you can buy in the store aren’t all that bad either. An American Classic as well.

3. Pecan Pie

Another popular pie at my family’s Thanksgiving table. I love the sweetness that comes with pecan pie. Sometimes, a texture issue with some taste buds, but after having pecan bars at a dinner someplace (I don’t remember where, maybe a friend’s house) – and then trying Pecan Pie. I was in heaven. I love it warmed up with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

2. Pumpkin Pie

I’ve had some really good pumpkin pies; and I’ve had some subpar pumpkin pies. All dependent on the pumpkin used – you can cook down a pumpkin at home or simply go to Walmart or your local supermarket and buy a can of instant pumpkin. By far, one of most popular pies to have this time of the year, but it doesn’t overthrow my favorite…which is:

1. Apple Pie

If Apple Pie was a sports franchise – it would be the New York Yankees. The New England Patriots. Everyone knows about it and it’s one of the first pies to come to mind. It’s an American Classic that can be enjoyed anytime, anywhere. With a slice of cheese, with a dollop of Cool Whip or Ice Cream, or fresh out of the oven. A good apple pie is determined by the kind of apple used in the pie itself – but regardless of the point – it takes the cake.
