UPDATE: the winning student’s title of Carnival Queen was stripped due to inappropriate behavior.

Sophie Erber of TV6 News said on the 6:00 telecast that there was a photo posted of the male student drinking on social media which was believe to be the cause of the title’s surrender. MTU’s Blue Key Society has given the new title of Winter Carnival Queen to first runner-up, Riley Simpson.

According to an article by the Keweenaw Report, the title of this year’s Winter Carnival Queen at Michigan Tech University (MTU) has been awarded — to a male student.

The winner, Zack Metiva, was sponsored by and representing the Michigan Tech’s Pep Band and Swift True Value Hardware in Houghton. He was crowned at Rosza Center on campus last Saturday evening.

Metiva is currently a fourth-year student majoring at MTU in Computer Network and System Administration. He also is the President of the student-run IT Oxygen Enterprise Team and the social chair of the pep band drumline.

Finishing in first runner-up was fourth-year mechanical engineering major, Riley Simpson and second runner-up went to fourth-year pre-health major, Dana Anderson.

Simpson was sponsored by the Guardians of the North club and the Cyberia Cafe, while Anderson was sponsored by the Theta Chi Epsilon, Beta Sigma Theta, and Mike Lahti Properties.
