Earlier Monday afternoon, Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that the entire Upper Peninsula (U.P.) and certain Northern Lower Peninsula regions can reopen starting this Friday at 12:01 a.m.

The phased reopening for Region 8 (entire U.P. region) and Region 6 (Alpena, Cheboygan, and Traverse City areas) will be based for retail stores, bars, restaurants, and other places.

Whitmer also said as part of this plan, the reopening of barbers, salons, spas, movie theaters, casinos or gyms are not permitted at this time.

In a news post by Jack Hall of the Radio Results Network (RRN), the main rules for this plan will be to have 50% capacity for all the establishments listed above, with servers required to wear masks, and continue to maintain strict health and safety guidelines, such as keeping groups six feet apart from one another.

“This is a big step, but we must all remember to continue doing our part to protect ourselves and our families from the spread of COVID-19,” Governor Whitmer said via RRN. “It’s crucial that all businesses do everything in their power to protect their workers, customers, and their families. And as we approach Memorial Day weekend, I encourage everyone to be smart and be safe. My team and I will continue to work around the clock to protect the people of Michigan.”

In addition to the reopenings, those businesses must create and develop a COVID-19 plan and have it available for both employees and customers.
