John McAfee, the founder of iconic software McAfee Antivirus was found dead in his prison cell in Spain. The New York Post is reporting:

Antivirus software tycoon John McAfee died by an apparent suicide in a Spanish jail cell Wednesday evening — hours after reports surfaced that he would be extradited to face federal charges in the US, according to local media.

John McAfee was awaiting extradition to the United States and confined to a prison in Barcelona. Authorities reportedly found his dead body in the cell. Mr. McAfee faced charges in the United States and had fought extradition to the U.S. According to the U.K.’s Daily Express:

US federal prosecutors unsealed an indictment in October against McAfee over charges that he evaded taxes and willfully failed to file returns.

An article at CNBC details Mr. McAfee’s legal difficulties:

McAfee was arrested last October at the international airport in Barcelona on the tax evasion charges, which are pending in federal court in Tennessee. He had been held in jail in Spain since then.

According to the indictment, McAfee earned millions of dollars in income from promoting cryptocurrencies, consulting work, speaking engagements, and selling the rights to his life story for a documentary.

“From 2014 to 2018, McAfee allegedly failed to file tax returns, despite receiving considerable income from these sources,” the U.S. Justice Department said in October.

Mr. McAfee claimed the case was politically motivated, but the Spanish judiciary did not agree:

He linked the charges filed by the Internal Revenue Service to his failed bid to run as a Libertarian Party candidate in the 2020 US presidential election, a second such attempt.

The Spanish prosecutor, Carlos Bautista, said McAfee was just a tax dodger and dismissed the accusation of a political motivation, insisting the Libertarian Party rarely gains more than 1 percent of votes in U.S. elections.
