Up until Friday, there had never been a female general manager in a major North American sport. That’s now changed with the Marlins hiring of Kim Ng.

Ng has been working in baseball for 30 seasons, including spending the last 10 in the commissioners office. Marlins owner Derek Jeter has seen Kim’s work firsthand, as she worked as the assistant general manager to Yankees’ Brian Cashman for multiple years of their dynasty (1998-2001). From there, she was the assistant general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2002 to 2011.

The Marlins parted ways with GM Michael Hill, letting his contract run out just days after they finished their first postseason berth since 2003. Kim will inherit a team that just went 31-29 and looks to take a promising step into the future. But for now? She’s shattered barriers for women in sports.
