In a rare inner-division deal, Rafael Montero is going North to Seattle, Washington to play for the Mariners as they try to solidify what was a terrible bullpen in 2020. In return, the Mariners are sending prospect Jose Corniell and a PTBNL to Arlington.
Montero posted a 4.08 ERA in 2019 but provided a 3.70 FIP, proving that he was a bit unlucky. It was his first full season in the Majors, but in 2019 he had posted a 2.48 ERA. He latched on in Texas on a minor-league pact following Tommy John Surgery. He was previously a top prospect with the Mets.
Corniell, the main return for the Rangers, is only 17 years old. The Mariners had acquired him in last years international free agency pool, but he hasn’t made his pro debut due to the pandemic.
