We are an hour away from the 2020 MLB Draft on MLB Network and ESPN. The draft was originally supposed to take place at the site of the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska but because of a recent pandemic it will be taking place back at Studio 42. So this being the first draft of the new decade and my first with PSE, I thought why not take a look back at every number one draft pick since 2000 and see where they are now. So let’s get started with the number one draft pick from the 2000 MLB Draft.

2000 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

1B; Adrian Gonzáles, Florida Marlins

Teams played with: Texas Rangers (2004-05), San Diego Padres (2006-10), Boston Red Sox (2011-12), Los Angeles Dodgers (2012-17), New York Mets (2018).

In the 2000 MLB Draft the then called Florida Marlins, now Miami Marlins, had the number 1 pick. With that first overall pick the Florida Marlins selected first baseman, Adrián González. Adrián was drafted straight out of Eastlake High School in Chula Vista, California.

Adrián didn’t make his debut with the Marlins as he was traded to the Rangers and made his debut with them in 2004. He spent a vast majority of his 15 year career with the Padres and the Dodgers.

Adrián finished his 15 year career with 2,050 hits, 317 home runs, a .287 batting avg, and an on-base percentage of .358. He is tied with Julio Franco at 432 of all time WAR leaders with a WAR of 43.6.

Adrián was a 5x All Star, a 4x Gold Glove winner, and a 2x Silver Slugger.

2001 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

C; Joe Mauer, Minnesota Twins

Teams played with: Minnesota Twins (2004-2018)

Home town boy Joe Mauer was selected by the Minnesota Twins with the number one pick of the 2001 MLB Draft out of Cretin High School in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Joe Mauer spent all 15 years of his career with the Minnesota Twins despite only winning one playoff game that was in his rookie year against the Yankees in the ALDS. The Yankees would go on to win the next three games eliminating the Twins from the 2004 playoffs. Minnesota has not won a playoff game since then.

In his career Mauer finished with a 55.3 WAR, 242nd on the all time list. Mauer is listed 4th amongst all time Twins in hits at 2,123, Sam Rice of the original Washington Senator’s leads with 2,889 hits followed by Kirby Puckett with 2,304 hits.

In 2008, Mauer became the first American League catcher to win the batting title twice posting a .328 batting average. His first batting title in 2006 he posted a .347 batting average. In 2009, Mauer would have the best season of his career. Mauer became the first catcher to lead the league in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage in a single year, and the first player to lead the American League in all three since George Brett did so in 1980. Mauer’s .365 average led Major League Baseball and was the highest mark among catchers (with at least a 3.1 plate appearances per game) since 1901, and was the highest in Twins history since Rod Carew’s .388 in 1976. Mauer went on to win his only MVP that year by almost a unanimous vote and won his second consecutive gold glove.

Due to injuries, Mauer was forced to move from catching to playing first base.

Mauer is a MVP, a 6x All-Star, a 3x Gold-Glove, a 5x Silver Slugger, and won the batting title 3 times.

Joe retired after the 2018 season and his number ‘7’ was retired by the Twins during the 2019 season.

2002 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

Teams played for: Pittsburgh Pirates ( 2005;2007), Cleveland Indians (2008), Toronto Blue Jays (2009), and Kansas City Royals (2010).

Bryan Bullington was originally drafted out of Madison Consolidated High School by the Kansas City Royals in the 37th round in 1999 but ultimately decided to go to college. In 2002 Bullington was picked by the Pittsburgh Pirates number one overall out of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.

Bryan made his Major League debut in 2005 against the Reds going 1.1 IP giving up one hit and giving up two earned runs. Bryan’s career record is 1-9 with a 5.62 ERA and a -0.2 WAR. His last game was in 2010 against the Indians where he went 2.1 IP giving up 1 hit, allowing zero runs, and striking out 3.

From 2011 to 2015, Bryan player in the Nippon Professional Baseball League, the highest level of baseball in Japan.

2003 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

RF; Delmon Young, Tampa Bay Devil Rays

Teams played for: Tampa Bay Devil Rays (2006-07; 2013), Minnesota Twins (2008-11), Detroit Tigers (2011-12), Philadelphia Phillies (2013), Baltimore Orioles (2014-15).

Delmon Young was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2003 straight out of Adolfo Camarillo High School in Camarillo, California. He made his Major League debut in 2006 against the Chicago White Sox where he went 2 for 3 with one home run. He finished second in the 2007 AL Rookie of the Year voting which was won by Boston’s Dustin Pedroia.

Delmon was the MVP of the 2012 ALCS with the Detroit Tigers.

Young ended his career in Baltimore with a WAR of 3.2, 1162 hits, 109 home runs, and an average of .283.

2004 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

P; Matt Bush, San Diego Padres

Teams played for: Texas Rangers (2016-2018)

Matt Bush was drafted by the San Diego Padres out of Mission Bay High School in San Diego, California.

Prior to Bush’s debut in 2016, he had only played as high as Double-A. He was traded to the Blue Jays by San Diego in 2009 but was released without ever playing. He played for the Rays organization before being released in 2012 in relation to a drunk driving incident where he served 39 months in state prison. After being released, Bush signed with the Texas Rangers where he played for four years, Majors and Minors.

Bush has a 2.6 WAR, 10 wins and 6 losses with a 3.35 ERA.

2005 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

LF; Justin Upton, Arizona Diamondbacks

Teams played for: Arizona Diamondbacks (2007-12), Atlanta Braves (2013-14), San Diego Padres (2015), Detroit Tigers (2016-17), Los Angeles Angels (2017-Present)

Justin Upton was drafted first overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2005 out of Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. Justin and his brother B.J. are the only two brothers in Major League Baseball to ever be selected as 1 and 2 in the first round of any draft. Upton made his Major League debut with the Diamondbacks in 2007, he was only 19.

Upton finished his rookie year with 2 home runs, 11 RBI’s, 2 stolen bases, and a .221 average. Even though the start of his career had planned out to be some what disappointment, he started to catch fire in the 2007 postseason finishing with a .357 batting average and a .571 slugging percentage in route to making it to the NLCS.

Upton is a 4x all star and a 3x silver-slugger. His career numbers going into his 13th season are a 34.4 WAR, with 1651 hits, 298 home runs, and a .266 batting average.

2006 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

P; Luke Hochevar, Kansas City Royals

Teams played for: Kansas City Royals (2007-13; 2015-16).

Luke was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 39th round of the 2002 draft out of Fowler High School in Fowler, Colorado. Instead Luke decided to go to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee where he would be drafted again by the LA Dodgers in 2005 with the 40th pick in the first round. A year later in 2006, Luke was drafted by the Kansas City Royals with the number one pick in the draft.

Luke made his Major League debut in 2017 against the Yankees where he gave up 3 hits in 3 innings pitched, striking out 1, and walking 1. He achieved his rookie status in 2008 where he finished with a record of 6-12 and an ERA of 5.51.

His best season was in 2013 where he had a record of 5-2 and an ERA of 1.92 in 58 games. Two years later Luke was part of the 2015 World Series winning Royals team. His last game was in 2016 against the Texas Rangers.

He has a career WAR of 3.7, a record of 46-65, and an ERA of 4.98. As previously mentioned he has a World Series ring as part of the 2015 Royals team.

2007 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

P; David Price, Tampa Bay Devil Rays

Teams played for: Tampa Bay Devil Rays (2008-14), Detroit Tigers (2014-15), Toronto Blue Jays (2015), Boston Red Sox (2016-2019), Los Angeles Dodgers (Present).

David Price was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 19th round of the 2004 draft out of Blackman High School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee but decided to go to college at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Then in 2007, David Price was selected by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays with the number one pick.

Price made his big league debut in 2008 against the Yankees where he went 5.1 innings, gave up 3 hits, allowing 2 earned runs, and striking out 4.

During the Rays 2008 playoff run, Price pitched as a reliever earning a save in game 7 of the ALCS sending Tampa to their first World Series. The Rays would go on to lose to the Phillies in five games.

In 2009, Price became a full time starter and in 2010 he was named the American League Starting pitcher in the All Star Game. He finished second in that years Cy Young voting but ultimately won his first Cy Young in 2012. The Rays traded Price to the Tigers in 2014 who then traded him to the Blue Jays in 2015. In 2016, the Boston Red Sox signed Price to a franchise record seven-year, $217 million contract. Price won the series-clinching Game 5 as the Sox beat the Dodgers in the 2018 World Series. The Sox traded Price to the Dodgers following the 2019 season.

David Price has a career 39.4 WAR, has a record of 150-80, and an ERA of 3.31. Price is a 5x All Star, a Cy Young winner in 2012, a 2x ERA Title winner, and a 2018 World Series winner.

2008 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

SS; Tim Beckham; Tampa Bay Rays

Teams played for: Tampa Bay Rays (2013; 2015-2017), Baltimore Orioles (2017-2018), Seattle Mariners (2019).

Tim Beckham was selected first overall by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008 out of Griffin High School in Griffin, Georgia. In 2011, Beckham was selected for the All Star Futures Game. In May of 2012, Beckham was suspended 50 games for a second positive test of a “drug of abuse”. Tim made his debut in 2013 with the Rays.

In January of 2019, Tim Beckham signed a 1 year deal with the Seattle Mariners and became their opening day starting shortstop. On August 6th, 2019 Beckham received a 80-game suspension without pay after testing positive for a performance enhancing substance, and ending his 2019 season. In December the Mariners non tendered his contract thus becoming a free agent.

Tim Beckham has a career WAR of 3.5, 402 hits, 63 home runs, and a .249 batting average.

2009 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

P; Stephen Strasburg, Washington Nationals

Teams played for: Washington Nationals (2010-present).

Stephen Strasburg was selected by the Washington Nationals in 2009 out of San Diego State University in San Diego, California.

Strasburg made his Major League debut in 2010 and what a debut it was. He went 7 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits, while striking out a franchise record 14 batters all while getting the win. Several months into his big league career, Strasburg was required to get Tommy John surgery after tearing a ligament in his pitching elbow. He rejoined the Nationals in 2011, only pitching 24 innings. In 2012 he became his new self being selected to the 2012 All Star game, the first of three. He won a Silver Slugger in 2012 as well.

Strasburg led the National League in strikeouts in 2014. In the 2019 playoffs, Strasburg recorded a record tying five wins for most victories in a single postseason, sharing with Randy Johnson and Francisco Rodriguez. He was awarded the 2019 World Series MVP as he helped lead the Nationals to their first ever World Series championship over the Houston Astros.

Strasburg has a career 33.5 WAR, a record of 112-58 and an ERA of 3.17. He is a 3x All Star, he’s won a Silver Slugger award, and he is a World Series Champion from 2019 along with the MVP of the World Series.

2010 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

RF; Bryce Harper, Washington Nationals

Teams played for: Washington Nationals (2012-2018), Philadelphia Phillies (2019-present).

In the first draft of the 2010’s the Washington Nationals selected Bryce Harper with their first pick out of the College of Southern Nevada in Henderson, Nevada.

Bryce Harper made his Major League debut in 2012 with the Nationals at 19 years old. He was selected for the 2012 All-Star game becoming the youngest position player to play in an All-Star game. Harper won the National League Rookie of the Year award in 2012. He was named the NL Most Valuable Player in 2015 by a unanimous vote while being tied for the NL lead in home runs at 42. At age 23, Harper became the youngest to ever win the MVP award. In 2018 Harper signed what was the richest contract in the history of North American sports, but was soon to be the second richest to Mike Trout, of 13 years, $330 million with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Why was Bryce Harper paid that much? Well he would probably say:

Bryce Harper has a career 31.8 WAR, 1071 hits, 219 home runs, and a .276 batting average.

Harper is a 6x All-Star, the 2012 NL ROTY, the 2015 NL MVP, and he’s won a Silver Slugger award and the NL Hank Aaron award in 2015.

2011 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

P; Gerrit Cole; Pittsburgh Pirates

Teams played for: Pittsburgh Pirates (2013-2017), Houston Astros (2018-2019), New York Yankees (Present).

Gerrit Cole was originally drafted by the New York Yankees in the 1st round as the 28th pick in the 2008 MLB Draft out of Orange Lutheran High School in Orange, California. Cole decided to go to college and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2011 out of the University of California in Los Angeles, California.

Cole made his MLB Debut in 2013 and was named the NL Rookie of the Month in September. He was named the NL Pitcher of the Month for April of 2015, and an MLB All-Star the same year. The Pirates traded Cole to the Astros following the 2017 season, the offseason after the Astros cheated their way to a World Series championship. In September 2019, Cole became the 18th pitcher in MLB History to strike out at least 300 batters in a season. December 16th, 2019, Cole signed a $324 million contract with the New York Yankees, signing the largest contract in history for a pitcher.

Gerrit Cole is a 3x All-Star, was on the 2019 All-MLB First Team, was the AL ERA leader in 2019, and was the MLB strikeout leader in 2019. Cole has a career 23.9 WAR, with a record of 94-52, and has an ERA of 3.22.

2012 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

SS; Carlos Correa, Houston Astros

Teams played for: Houston Astros (2015-Present).

Carlos Correa was drafted by the Houston Astros in 2012 out of Puerto Rico Baseball Academy in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. Correa made his major league debut in 2015 and won the AL Rookie of the Year award. In 2017, Correa appeared in the World Baseball Classic with Puerto Rico. He also won the AL Player of the Month in May 2017. He was named on the AL All-Star team in 2017 and won the World Series with the 2017 Astros.

In Correa’s short career he has a 24.5 WAR, 573 hits, 102 home runs and a .277 batting average.

2013 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

P; Mark Appel, Houston Astros

Teams played for: Houston Astros MILB affiliates (2013-2015), Philadelphia Phillies MILB affiliates (2015-2018).

Mark Appel was drafted by three teams. Originally he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers out of Monte Vista High School in Danville, California in the 15th round of the 2009 draft. Instead of signing, Mark decided to go to Stanford University in Palo Alto, California where he was drafted in 2012 by the Pittsburgh Pirates 8th overall. Mark decided to return for his senior year and was then drafted number one in the 2013 draft by the Houston Astros.

Appel was traded in 2015 to the Phillies. He continued to struggle so the Phillies designated him for assignment in 2017. In February of 2018, Appel announced he would step away from baseball.

Mark Appel has never made his Major league debut.

2014 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

P; Brady Aiken, Houston Astros

Teams played for: Cleveland Indians Minor League system (2016-2017; 2019).

Brady Aiken was drafted first overall by the Houston Astros in 2014 out of Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego, California. However Aiken did not sign with the Astros and was later drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 2015 draft, 17th overall, out of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

Aiken made his professional debut with the Arizona League Indians in June 2016, and was later promoted to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. He spent the 2017 season with the Lake County Captains of the Class A Midwest League. He did not pitch in 2018 and only pitched in two games in 2019. Aiken took some time away from baseball. The Indians were unsure of his status going forward into the 2020 season.

Aiken has not made his Major league debut.

2015 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

SS; Dansby Swanson, Arizona Diamondbacks

Teams played for: Atlanta Braves (2016-present).

Dansby Swanson was drafted out of high school by the Colorado Rockies in the 38th round of the 2012 MLB Draft out of Marietta High School in Marietta, Georgia. Instead Swanson decided to go to college at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. In 2015 the Arizona Diamondbacks selected Dansby number one overall in the draft but later in the offseason traded him to the Atlanta Braves where he has been since.

The Braves invited Swanson to spring training, and he was sent to the Carolina Mudcats at the end of spring training. Swanson was promoted to the Mississippi Braves on April 30, 2016, after hitting .333/.441/.526 in 21 appearances at Carolina.

Dansby was called to play in the All-Star Futures game. Swanson made his Major league debut in 2016 against the Minnesota Twins. He racked up two hits in his debut. September 6th, Swanson hit an inside the park home run, the Braves first since 2001. With the hit, Dansby became only the second Brave to have his first career home run be an inside the park homer.

In 2018 Dansby struggled throughout the season after returning from a left wrist stain. September 26th, Dansby was injured during an at bat against Met’s pitcher Noah Syndergaard. He was diagnosed with with a torn ligament in his left hand. Swanson was left off the Braves Division series roster.

In 2019, Dansby got off to a productive first part of the season before the All Star break, hitting .270 with 17 home runs. But he missed some time in the second half with a heel injury struggled after returning hitting .204 with 0 home runs over 142 at bats. For the season, he hit .251 with 17 home runs, 65 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases.

Getting his first hint of postseason games, Swanson finished with a .389 batting average and .977 OPS over 19 plate appearances in the NLDS against the Cardinals. The Braves lost the NLDS to the Cardinals in five games.

Over Dansby’s 4 year career he has a WAR of 4.6, 387 hits, 40 home runs, and an average of .245.

2016 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

OF; Mickey Moniak; Philadelphia Phillies

Teams played for: Philadelphia Phillies affiliates (2016-present).

Mickey Moniak was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2016 MLB Draft out of La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, California.

Moniak made his professional debut with the Gulf Coast Phillies in 2016. Moniak spent all of his first professional season there, batting .284/.340/.409 with 27 runs. Baseball America ranked him the Number 17 prospect in baseball, and MLB.com ranked him Number 19.

Moniak spent 2017 with the Lakewood BlueClaws who he batted .236/.284/.341 with six triples, five home runs, and 44 RBIs. Baseball America named him the best defensive player of his draft class, the second-best pure hitter (behind Nick Senzel), the second-best high school player (behind Bo Bichette), and the high school player closest to making his major league debut.

He spent the 2018 season with the Clearwater Threshers. Moniak hit .270/.304/.383 with 28 doubles, five home runs, and 55 RBIs.

Moniak received a spring training invite to the Phillies Major League camp at the start of the 2019 season. He played the 2019 season with the Reading Fighting Phils batting .252/.303/.439 with 63 runs, 11 home runs, and 67 RBIs. Moniak was selected to play in the Eastern League All-Star Game halfway through the season.

Mikey Moniak has not made his MLB Debut yet.

2017 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

SS; Royce Lewis, Minnesota Twins

Teams played for: Minnesota Twins Minor League affiliates (2017-present).

Royce Lewis was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 2017 MLB Draft out of JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, California.

Lewis made his professional debut with the Gulf Coast League Twins on June 26. On August 12, Lewis was promoted to the Cedar Rapids Kernels He finished 2017 with a combined .279 batting average, four home runs, 27 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases in 54 games between both clubs.

Lewis began the 2018 season with Cedar Rapids. In 75 games for Cedar Rapids, he batted .315 with nine home runs and 53 RBIs. On July 14, 2018, Lewis was promoted to the Fort Myers Miracle.

On July 26, 2018 MLB.com ranked Lewis as the 10th best prospect in baseball.

The Twins invited Lewis to spring training as a non-roster player in 2019. He returned to Fort Myers to begin the 2019 season. He was ranked the fifth-best prospect by MLB.com at the beginning of the 2019 season. Lewis was named to the 2019 All-Star Futures Game. In July, he was promoted to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos ov 127 games between the two clubs, he slashed .236/.290/.371 with 12 home runs, 49 RBIs, and 22 stolen bases.

Royce Lewis has not made his Major League debut yet.

2018 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

P; Casey Mize, Detroit Tigers

Teams played for: Detroit Tigers Minor League affiliates (2018-present).

Casey Mize was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 2018 MLB Draft out of Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama.

Mize made his professional debut with the Gulf Coast Tigers. After one start, he was promoted to the Lakeland Flying Tigers. After compiling a combined 0–1 record with a 3.95 ERA in five starts between both teams, Casey Mize was shut down for the rest of the season due to an innings limit.

In 2019, the Tigers invited Mize to spring training as a non-roster player. He returned to Lakeland to begin the 2019 season, and was their Opening Day starter. After making four starts for Lakeland with an 0.35 ERA, the Tigers promoted Mize to the Erie SeaWolves. In his first start for Erie, he tossed a no-hitter, in which he hit a batter, walked another, and struck out seven on 98 pitches, in a 1–0 SeaWolves victory over the Altoona Curve. On June 15, Mize was placed on the 7-day injured list with shoulder inflammation.

Casey Mize has not made his Major League debut yet.

2019 MLB Draft; Number 1 Overall Pick

C; Adley Rutschman, Baltimore Orioles

Teams played for: Baltimore Orioles Minor League affiliates (2019-Present).

Adley Rutschman was originally drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 40th round of the 2016 MLB Draft from Sherwood High School in Sherwood, Oregon. Adley decided to go to college where he would become one of, if not the, greatest catcher to come out of OSU. The Baltimore Orioles drafted Rutschman in the 2019 MLB Draft out of Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.

Adley made his professional debut with the Gulf Coast League Orioles, and, after five games, was promoted to the Aberdeen IronBirds. After three weeks with the IronBirds, Rutschman was promoted to the Delmarva Shorebirds. Over 37 games between the three clubs, he slashed .254/.351/.423 with four home runs and 26 RBIs.
