According to an article by news anchor Steve Asplund and Alissa Pietila of WLUC TV6, Bruce Turner, longtime broadcaster and public broadcasting pioneer in the Upper Peninsula, has passed away Monday afternoon after a brief illness.

He was just 82 years old.

Turner was known for his enthusiasm and enduring passion for public broadcasting. He is also known as the founder of WNMU-TV on Northern Michigan University campus in Marquette, and remained as the station’s manager until his retirement in 2019.

He also worked for WLUC TV6 in the 1960s.

NMU’s Director of Broadcast & AV Services Eric Smith said that Turner also served as ‘chair of the Michigan Association of Public Broadcaster’s programming committee and was well respected by Michigan stations as the ‘go to’ person resolving underwriting policy issues.’

Smith has also added that Turner ‘had a passion for public broadcasting, and how it expanded educational/cultural opportunities for the people of Upper Michigan.’

There has been no funeral arrangements made and announced at this present time.
