Earlier today, the Lions made a surprising announcement. Announcing that special teams coordinator Brayden Coombs was fired. The reasoning of the firing was because Coombs ran a fake punt yesterday without telling anyone else.

According to reports, this decision was made by Darrell Bevell and was approved by Rod Wood.

Bevell shouldn’t be making these kinds of decisions. He is an interim head coach, who might not even be back next season. This is a decision for the next coach and manager to make, not for Bevell. This comes as a huge surprise. The Lions not only had one of the best special team units in the league, but Coombs was one of the most well-liked guys in the organization. More players came to back Coombs in the last few hours than any players did when Matt Patricia got fired. That should tell you everything you need to know.

Lions kick returner, Jamal Agnew clearly wasn’t happy about the news. neither was Tony Mcrae or Jason Cabinda. Punter Jack Fox said he wouldn’t even be a Pro Bowler without Coombs. I imagine many more players feel the same way. They should, this special teams unit was one of the best in the NFL. Coombs will find another job real fast, as he has proven this year to be one of the best young coaches. Ridiculous that this happened.
