I can already hear the uproar and booing from fans as Roger Goodell announces that ‘with the 7th Pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select, Penei Sewell, Oregon’. Yeah it’s not the sexiest pick ever and everyone wants a a big play receiver who’s going to entertain them, but you win football games in the front-7 and people forget about when we drafted a WR in the 1st round three years in a row. There will be WR’s a plenty not only on Day 2 but next year and the year after. WR’s pretty much grow on trees at this point with more and more studs being churned out every year. The Lions could easily find a diamond in the second round (Terrace Marshall, Rondale Moore, Elijah Moore, just to name a few). The Lions are clearly in a rebuild mode, and solidifying the OL for years to come is a much better investment than having a young rookie WR ball out in his first year on a team that won’t win more than 6 games max. Most consider the Oregon offensive lineman as one of the top-3 overall talents in the class, along with Trevor Lawrence & Kyle Pitts. He’s athletic and can play anywhere on the line. As you can see in the video below, he is great at run blocking and if he gets beat in pass protection he’s agile enough to recover and still do his job.

He lined up at LT in college, but recently he’s being practicing at RT as well and possibly in the future could be moved to the interior. One of the knocks on him is that he has short arms, but they also said that about Aaron Donald lol. Once he gets his hands on you it’s over. Look at this video below of him going up against Derrick Brown, who the Panthers drafted at #7 overall last year.

As I said earlier, Lions’ fans might not be crazy about the pick initially, but they will eventually after they see how unreal the OL will be. Him at RT, Decker at LT, and Ragnow. And you know that Dan Campbell is going to want to run the ball down everyones throats. Get Goff his protection, open holes for Swift & KJ, and hit on a WR on Day 2. If Pitts & Chase are already gone by #7, this would be a smart pick by Brad Holmes.
