After interviewing 11 candidates (some not as qualified as others in my opinion), the New York Knicks have signed David Fizdale to a 4 year contract to become their 29th head coach, after turning down the same position offered by the Phoenix Suns.
Fizdale is the former head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies and brings a record of 50-51 with him to New York. He was fired by the Grizzlies on November 27, 2017 after a slow start and fallout with Marc Gasol.
The Knicks have won one playoff series since 2001, have missed the playoffs each of the past 5 seasons and have easily been one of the worst franchises in the 4 major sports.
As a long time suffering Knicks fan, it finally feels like they have done something right. James Dolan decided to not make his usual horrible decisions and didn’t hire a Mark Jackson, a Kenny Smith (who has never coached before and said he thinks his time as an analyst prepared him enough), Phil Jackson, or someone that isn’t the best fit for the job.
Star free agents haven’t wanted to sign with the Knicks in a long time, but now it just became a little more attractive for free agents. If the front office can put some more talent on the court at Madison Square Garden then I am confident that David Fizdale can potentially be the guy that turns around the losing culture that we have had had so long and turn New York City back into the “Mecca of Basketball”.
