Johnny Manziel Returning To Play Football For New Startup League

Ladies and gentlemen, Johnny Football is back!

As reported by ESPN, Johnny Manziel is returning to the gridiron. He has agreed to play for the new startup league, Fan Controlled Football. Set to launch in February 2021, the league will feature 7 on 7 games and last ab out an hour. Obviously much quicker and less time consuming than the usual three hours for NFL games, apparently set to appeal to a younger generation who may not have that attention span.

The entire premise, hence the league name, is going to be a draw for fans who will have an impact on the games and easier to interact with.

Johnny Manziel did give a quote, from ESPN:

“The more I heard about what this was going to be, the more I felt it was going to be something that was just very fun. It’s going to be very fan-oriented and something I could get behind without being extremely, extremely, extremely serious, the way that my football career has been in the past.”

I will say that there is a reason why the NFL is serious business, whereas this new FCF will be much more relaxed. Even trying to compare the two or the workload maybe shows why Manziel didn’t last very long in the big time and flamed out within two years. After being canned by the Cleveland Browns in 2015, his time in Canada and with the short-lived AAF didn’t go well either. I guess those were way too “serious” for him too, and he didn’t want that…no, of course not.

All negatives aside, it appears that Manziel is in a much better place now than he was five years ago, telling ESPN:

“I wake up with a smile on my face way more than I used to in the past, when people would have said that I had everything. It’s funny how life works sometimes. You have everything and you can be upset, and when you have a lot less, you can be way happier. I’m at a point in my life where I’m 28 years old and I’m still trying to figure out what I’m doing moving forward and trying to re-create an identity, and that’s what the past year has been about for me.”

Ultimately, that is what’s most important. If he is happy and healthy and still wants to play football without all the stress, good for him. With the XFL also set to return (thanks to The Rock running things behind the scenes) in 2022, there will be plenty of options outside of the NFL. Personally, I enjoy the options. I get a kick out of XFL giving it a go (again), and I also enjoy watching arena football where it is much more fun than. If there is anybody that defines fun and plays football, it is Johnny Manziel.

I’m all for it. Let’s go!
