Deadline is reporting that John Cena will reprise his role of the Peacemaker from the upcoming Suicide Squad film. According to the entertainment news site:

The streamer has handed Peacemaker an eight-episode straight-to-series order for its first season with The Suicide Squad director writing all episodes and directing a number of them.

The show will explore the origins of the character that Cena plays in the 2021 movie.

Cena’s acting career continues to grow as he has a starring role in the latest The Fast and the Furious film as well as Suicide Squad. While Peacemaker is an action role on its surface, there is much more to the character. James Gunn spoke to Deadline about what draws him to the character:

“Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag. I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”

Peacemaker is a comic book character first published in the Silver Age of comics by Charlton Comics. The character’s premise is that of a pacifist so dedicated to peace that he adopts his superhero identity to create it. The character was incorporated into the DC Universe when DC acquired the rights to Charlton’s characters. As Watchmen fans know, the Comedian was based on Peacemaker.
