Fans of the long-delayed film Avatar 2 will be happy to know that filming is finally finished. The UK’s The Independent is reporting:

Filmmaker James Cameron has revealed that filming on Avatar 2is finally complete, following delays brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

The sequel to the hit 2009 sci-fi blockbuster has been in production for years, with its scheduled release date pushed back eight times.

The 2009 science fiction film became an instant classic, receiving widespread praise despite initial skepticism as to how it would fare at the box office. Avatar became the first film to break the $2 billion dollar mark. When James Cameron announced multiple sequels, fans were understandably excited, but the film has been pushed back several times, leading to skepticism as to a release date.

According to Cameron:

Covid hit us like it hit everybody… We lost about four and a half months of production. As a result of that, we’ve rolled around one more full year for a release in December of 2022. That’s been announced already. Now that doesn’t mean I have an extra year to finish the film, because the day we deliver Avatar 2 we’ll just start working on finishing Avatar 3.

The film is scheduled for a December 2022 release, which is still a long way off. Hopefully, the film will match the high quality set by the original and be the latest masterpiece in Cameron’s impressive screen legacy. As of this writing, the film is rumored to star Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, CCH Pounder, Matt Gerald, and Sigourney Weaver.
