UFC Lightweight Champion, Charles Oliveira, will defend his title for the first time against number one ranked contender Dustin Poirier. Oliveira is coming off a vacant lightweight championship win against Michael Chandler via TKO. Poirier is famously coming off his win over Conor McGregor that resulted in a doctor’s stoppage after McGregor broke his leg.

Rumors were swirling of a possible bout against Nate Diaz, but alas, Poirier will be fighting for the lightweight championship belt against Oliveira. “Overall, Poirier has gone on a ridiculous 7-1 run in his past eight fights including two wins over McGregor as well as victories against Max Holloway, Justin Gaethje, and Dan Hooker” (MMAFighting).

Oliveira’s nine-win fight streak is even more impressive with wins over the likes of Tony Ferguson, Michael Chandler, Kevin Lee, David Teymur, Jim Miller, Clay Guida, etc. Poirier seemingly confirmed the news with the following tweet:

Whoever wins the fight will have options such as Justin Gaethje, Beneil Dariush, or the money fights Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz hanging out there for the taking. The lightweight division is a stacked division where one punch could mean the difference between victory or defeat.
