Georgia got two huge transfers within 30 minutes today. First is Derion Kendrick, he played 39 games for Clemson over the last three seasons. Kendrick started his career as a wide receiver but switched to defensive back in 2019, earning second-team All-ACC and then first-team selection in 2020. The second is Arik Gilbert, who started eight games for LSU this past year. He was second in receiving for LSU with 35 catches for 268 yards and two touchdowns. Gilbert is originally from Georgia, “Coming home, I believe it was a smart decision to come home. I wanted to be with and near my family,” Gilbert said, via Dawgs247. “I have been missing all of family and now both of my Grandmothers will be able to see me play in person too.”
Gilbert originally committed to Florida in January but changed his mind a month later. Gilbert is a former five-star and plans to play wide receiver instead of tight end. Georgia has Darnell Washington at the tight end spot and receiver George Pickens tore his ACL in March. Georgia added Tykee Smith from West Virginia and Brandon Turnage from Alabama, earlier from the transfer portal. Both those guys are defensive backs. With most of the offense coming back, and a top-four recruiting class coming in, expectations are higher for Georgia more than ever.
Georgia has been a top-five program over the past few years. UGA has one SEC title, three appearances, Sugar Bowl win, Peach Bowl win, Rose Bowl victory and a National Championship appearance, all since the 2017 season. The two things that has haunted UGA has been Alabama and that National Championship. Beating Alabama basically puts you in that position to win the championship. UGA haas had three second half leads on Alabama under Kirby Smart and have choked away all three. One in the National Championship and in the SEC Championship. It is now or never for Kirby Smart and the Dawgs. Kirby has been at UGA since 2016 with a record of 52-14 and has exceeded expectations within his first few years. Now, the pressure is on, no more excuses. Kirby won’t bee fired or anything, but if Georgia doesn’t get the big one this year then when will they? Loaded offense with a potential Heisman candidate leading the way in JT Daniels with these additions on defense plus once again a top recruiting class, the Dawgs have all they need to make a run for the title. Now it’s time to prove everyone you belong.
