UMiami Hurricanes quarterback Tate Martell has opted-out of the 2020 college football season. Might be big news to some, but as a Canes fan it’s not surprising at all. He hasn’t been listed on the depth chart for the past two weeks, which is 3-deep at QB with D’Eriq King as the starter, N’Kosi Perry as the backup, and freshman Tyler Van Dyke at 3rd string.
He was never going to start at quarterback for Miami. he was in the battle for starter in 2019, and after losing the job to the already departed Jarren Williams, he threw a hissy-fit and ripped the name-shield off his locker. Then days later he comes back and pretends to be a good teammate while being a coy slot-WR used to distract defenses. He came in highly regarded as the OSU transfer and former 5-star recruit. But, it was widely shown in the 2019 practices and scrimmages that the arm-talent just isn’t there. Some of you may have watched him on the Hulu show QB1, which is a great watch. He has an awesome HS highlight reel, but he was played in a spread offense for one of the top-tier programs with tons of talent, and just got away of being fast in high school, which doesn’t get you by when you get to the next level. He was pretty much Johnny Manziel at A&M but in high school. Both of them were very fun to watch but once they got to the next level they just couldn’t just get away with their natural athleticism, whether it be Johnny in the NFL or Tate in D1. In the end, after he didn’t win the job in 2019, I think he lost interest into being a serious football player in Coral Gables.
Besides his lack of arm talent, you might have heard of his extremely hot girlfriend, Kiki Passo:
Not gonna lie, even if I was a QB at UMiami, I’d be a little distracted myself. It must be noted that he took a leave of absence from the team last year to spend a weekend with her. It’s also funny to mention that Tate’s mom had mentioned at one point that she was a bad influence on him.
My point is that I think Tate might just hang up the cleats entirely. There hasn’t been anything mentioned yet of him actually transferring and he seems pretty ok with just chillin in Miami with his girl. At this point I hope he knows that he’s not going to make it to the NFL and if he still wants to play QB in college he’s going to need to transfer to a much smaller school, maybe back home at UNLV.
Overall I wish the kid the best, but it must be remembered how when Justin Fields transferred to OSU, Tate talked shit then just bounced. Karma can be a bitch sometimes. I had high hopes for him, but maybe his cockiness was his ultimate downfall.
