The quarterback position has been a source of drama for the Green Bay Packers organization for several years now. However, 2021 may be the most dramatic of all. While it was announced that the Packers signed veteran quarterback Blake Bortles several weeks ago, what flew under the radar was the fact that they signed quarterback Kurt Benkert after a minicamp tryout a week after signing Bortles.
Benkert was previously with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2018.. He spent the 2018 and 2020 seasons on the Falcons’ practice squad and was on injured reserve (toe) in 2019. The Falcons realeased him from the practice squad this past February.
When it comes down to it, it appears that Green Bay is going to call Aaron Rodgers bluff but are signing quarterbacks just as a hedged bet. Even if Rodgers does sit out, Jordan Love could be a great option as a replacement and he could easily learn under veteran QB Bortles. With that said, rumor has it that the Packers front office think that Rodgers is all talk and will eventually suit up for Green Bay for the 2021 season.
Rumors have swirled that Rodgers will end up with the Denver Broncos. In fact, reports came out three days ago that Rodgers was going to be traded in the next 48-72 hours. While it is still a possibility, that has not come to fruition just yet. My guess is that the Packers and Rodgers will work things out, and if he is traded, it will not be until after the 2021 season is over.
