Jon Lester hit free agency as the Cubs bought out the remainder of his deal. The 37-year-old southpaw is coming off of the worst season of his career, having posted a 5.16 ERA with a negative WAR.

Lester, however, is still only two years removed from his fifth career All-Star nod. Due to his age and his performance the last two seasons, the odds of him getting another big deal isn’t likely. But, Lester has a 3.60 lifetime ERA (3.69 FIP) between Boston, Oakland and Chicago, a 193-111 record and 2397 strikeouts. He’s pitched near 2600 innings and will absolutely eat innings for a club that needs a veteran presence. Enter: The Giants.

Both pitching coach Andrew Bailey and manager Gabe Kapler teamed with Lester in Boston. Lester would give them a solid rotation arm and if they somehow were to sneak into the playoffs, they have somebody with pedigree and experience. Lester has won a Championship in Chicago and Boston, while pitching in the postseason everywhere he’s been. He was the 2016 NLCS MVP. He has a 2.51 lifetime postseason ERA.
