Statistically, the Celtics are in a good place. The winner of Game 5 goes on to on the Toronto Raptors in Wednesday’s Game 6 of the ensuing NBA Playoff series. After losing back-to-back games, the Celtics dropped the hammer with a lopsided 111-89 victory over the Raptors in Game 5. It’s a win-or-go-home scenario for Toronto as they try to unearth the same motivation that brought them back from being down .
Perhaps the most surprising takeaway from Game 5—other than one team getting crushed like canned tomatoes—was the lack of urgency from the Raptors. They looked lethargic until the second-half when the game was basically already over. Where was that same energy they had in Game 4?
The Celtics are clearly the more talented basketball team in the series, but the Raptors have been able to push them strictly on heart and willpower. They were aggressive with offensive possessions and fought on every defensive play like it was less than two minutes in a fourth quarter. That’s the team that has to show up for the Raptors to win on Wednesday.
played in league history would be an understatement. That statistic factors in home court advantage, which has meant nothing in these playoffs. The “road” team has won every game in this series so far and, in that sense, this is a road game for the Raptors.
The Celtics are 6-3 so far this season vs the Raptors. They won the season series 3-1, including handing the Raptors their only loss in the seeding games. They are up 3-2 in this round of the playoffs so far. 4 of those 6 wins have been by 15 or more points. The Raptors have won their 3 games by 16 points, 7 points, and 1 point.
The Raptors are a very tough team and they play hard on every possession. They were down 0-2 to the Bucks last season and came back to beat the Bucks in the Eastern Conference Finals. They are going to fight and scrap every inch of the way and the Celtics must be tougher and play harder and and give another effort like they did in Game 5 if they want to win this series.
Serge Ibaka left Game 5 with a sprained ankle and was seen at the Tuesday media availability in a walking boot. His status is questionable for this game. If he can’t go, or is limited, Robert Boucher and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson should see more minutes. Patrick McCaw (knee) and Oshae Brissett (knee) remain out for the Raptors.
Gordon Hayward s back in the bubble but is still in quarantine and is not expected to be back on the court to play unless the Celtics advance. Vincent Poirier is listed as day to day after leaving the bubble for the birth of his child. Javonte Green remains out with the knee injury.
More importantly, they can’t shoot 38.8 percent from the floor with both Kyle Lowry and Pascal Siakam being held to only 10 points. That’s a surefire recipe for losing and watching the rest of the playoffs in quarantine on a couch somewhere. Guys have to be smarter about their shot selection.
When does Nick Nurse say enough is enough and stop his team from jacking up so many 3-pointers? If shots aren’t falling, the Raptors have to be willing to move to something else. They also can’t have a night where they’re allowing the Celtics to average nearly 50.0 percent shooting. It was downright horrific defense from a team that ranked second throughout the regular season in opponent field goal percentage (42.8). They have to get up into shooters and force them into bad shots.
