So it must be one of those Circle of Life kind of things. If a game does really well the first time around, chances are we’ll see it again as some kind of remake.

And two big titles from the 16-bit era seem to be coming around again. The news comes straight from the GameStop Managers Conference that’s currently taking place in Nashville, with word that both Disney’s Aladdin and Disney’s The Lion King, two big hits from the 16-bit era, are set to get remakes for various consoles this October. The games are reportedly set to arrive on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC. No word yet on the publisher, with Disney publishing. Both physical and digital versions will likely be available, with GameStop getting the exclusivity to physical editions on consoles.

UPDATE: Here are the included games:

  • Disney’s Aladdin – SEGA Genesis version
  • Disney’s Aladdin – Game Boy version (includes “Super Game Boy version,” which implies a bit more color, Super Game Boy-style)
  • Disney’s Aladdin Final Cut – We don’t know what this is but asked (we haven’t heard back)
  • Disney’s Aladdin Trade Show Demo – A demo version “that has not been publicly available since 1993,” according to the press release
  • The Lion King – SEGA Genesis version
  • The Lion King – Super Nintendo version
  • The Lion King – Game Boy version (also includes “Super Game Boy” version)

And here’s the official cover art:

So SNES Aladdin is NOT included. Apologies for the error earlier.

The games will also come with a rewind and fast-forward feature, along with an “assist” option, just in case you can’t beat The Lion King still. (And some of you just can’t. I mean, I can. I think?)

There’s no official announcement yet, but rumor has it that we’ll get one as soon as tomorrow, with a possible appearance of the games at this weekend’s PAX West event in Seattle – which is where I’m headed. So that nostalgia machine could be cranking overtime, if all goes according to plan.

Hopefully we’ll see other Disney games following as well, like The Jungle Book and, hey, Chip ‘n Dale’s Rescue Rangers? And a little Darkwing Duck never hurts either, y’know…
